DHTML DHTML stands for Dynamic Hypertext Markup Language. The concept behind DHTML, is to create Dynamic pages that can change even after the page has loaded onto your computer. It is not a specific technology per say, but a concept made possible by many other technologies, such as VBscript, Javascript, ActiveX and more. Many people don't know that HTML can be changed after it's downloaded to ones machine, well that's not the case. It's called client-side scripting, and it has been around for quite some time now. For example, when you move your mouse over a piece of text or an image, and it changes, that is an example of client-side scripting, and that's one example of DHTML. The means by which elements of pages or document objects are open to scripting languages is called the Document object model, or DOM. In a way, the DOM is the heart of DHTML, its what makes the HTML dynamic, or changeable. To sum it all up, DHTML isn't really a technology in itself, but a conglomeration of others that allow a web page to become dynamic, even after it has downloaded to your machine, by means of manipulating the document objects or elements of pages via scripting languages. |
