The torn and burnt look ( part 4 ) - Photoshop

 

OK almost done. Create a new layer...

New layer

and select a DARKER shade of color from the color picker than the one you just filled your rectangle with. I just used a medium shade of blue, so I will use a darker shade of blue this time. Dont' go too much darker, or it will look unrealistic. Just a few shades.

Now select the airbrush tool...

..and select a medium to large soft brush. I used 65 soft round and a pressure setting of 10%.

OK now on the NEW LAYER that you made above ( should be layer 2 ) add some of the darker shade of color to the edges of the tear, similar to what I have done below.

OK, now that you have finished that, hold down the CTRL key and left-click on the first layer, this will select that layer.

Now inverse the selection ( select->inverse ) and press the delete key. You should be all set and the end result should be pretty neat.
