Creating Engraved Text - Photoshop CS

This tutorial will describe how to create that "engraved" text look in Photoshop 6.

First, create a new document:

New image menu

You will see another box open up asking you to specify the properties of the new image you would like to create...

New image properties

In this case I used a width of 300 pixels and a height of 75 pixels.

Create a new layer.

When your on the new layer, I used the rectangular marquee tool to split the color of the image...blue on the left and white on the right hand site, using the paint bucket. I would stay away from dark colors, as the final effect woudn't look so great.

After splitting the image.

There. That wasn't so bad. Now, select your text tool and select a font ( I used the impact font for this ). The larger the font the better the final result will look. It doesn't matter what color you choose for the font. I used a grey color in this example.

Example 2

Note: The text will be on its own layer. You should have a total of 3 layers now, including the text layer.

This next step is the most important. With the text layer selected, apply the inner shadow filter to the text. Click on layer, then layer style, then inner shadow. The default settings should work fine.

Now, still with the text layer highlighted, go to the layer options and change the layer style to "overlay". This can be done on the layer menu itself, or from the layer menu on top, under layer style and blending options. Your final result will look something like this:
