Working with colormasks in Photoshop There are several ways to mask out colors in Photoshop. This is the way I like to do it. We will cover other ways in a different section. First thing you need to do is open up any color image you choose. The higher quality the image, the better the final outcome will look. I chose this picture:
Next thing you need to do is duplicate the layer by clicking on layer, then duplicate layer on the menu above. You can also right click on the layer you want to duplicate, and select duplicate layer from the menu that opens.
Next you want to select the original layer, and desaturate it. Click on image, adjust, and desaturate from the menu above.
Now go back to the duplicate layer by clicking on it. You should have two layers now, 1 which is the original, and is now desaturated ( void of color ), and the duplicate layer, which is still colorized. My layers menu looks like this:
