1. Relevant keywords
Obviously when someone searches for a particular
keyword or keyphrase, it must be a phrase or word that is in your
title, or in the first 20 or so words of your page that Google Indexes.
Google is also one of the few engines that will index text from
drop down menus. If your site is listed in the DMOZ
open directory project, Google will index the description provided
from them.
2. PageRank
This is one thing Google uses that helps
a lot. Page ranking is Googles way of determining how popular a
page is. Mainly this is done by Google calculating how many 'backward
links' point to your site. Not only is it the number of backward
links that count, but the page ranking of those sites are
very important also. Pagerank is based on a scale of 1-10, 10 being
the highest. Only a handful of sites have a pagerank of 10, such
as Google itself, Yahoo!, Microsoft, and a few others. To view the
pagerank of a site, you can download the Google toolbar by clicking here.
3. Themes
Google also ranks based on site themes. By
this, the more sites that link to you, that have similar content
and keywords and phrases, the better. This establishes a 'theme'
for your site. Many engines, not only Google, are now using themes
to help them rank pages in an index.
